PRESENTATION
The LEATHER JAPAN 2012 presentation took place on Monday, February 13 at The Box at Lincoln Center in New York City. LEATHER JAPAN 2012 brought the best of Japanese fashion and accessories to New York City. The presentation featured collaborations between top Japanese ready-to-weardesigners and accessory designers; showcasing exciting new looks in leather. Collaborations included:
*SOMARTA (wears) +NORITAKA TATEHANA (shoes)*
“I designed the clothes with the image of a ‘falcon’ in mind. For the dress and top, we used bonding processed deer leather and applied a cutting technique to resemble a bird’s feathers. For the jacket, we used a thicker leather and applied geometric patterned embroidery.” – Tamae Hirokawa (SOMARTA)
“This time I made three colors: gold, black and grey-beige collaborating with Ms.Hirokawa of SOMARTA. The feather-like geometric pattern was designed by SOMA DESIGN and I made the stamps. The leather wear designed by Ms.Hirokawa mainly had geometric pattern stitches, but my shoes had stamped geometric patterns standing out three-dimensionally on leather so the difference in expression made a contrast. Both the base material’s benefits and the design’s diverseness was brought out in this total look.” – Noritaka Tatehana
“‘women should be emboldened’ — I expressed the two sides of women: the strong outer appearance by leather and the nicety of the inner by lace. This came from my experience when I was moved at the Vogue Fashion’s Night Out in Japan where editors from all over the world came and there, I felt that women have a very strong influence.” – Motonari Ono
*NO,NO,YES! (wears)+ LE PARRAIN (shoes)*
“RELAX LEATHER ZEN — The leather tanned by pure water from the mountains matches the No,No,Yes!’s pursuit of the Japanese style. This theme encapsulates the pursuit of excellence in the KARESANSUI’s aesthetics of using controlled ink painting colors.” – Taichiro Hashimoto (NO,NO, YES!)
“Incorporating this season’s No,No,Yes!’s theme, all the items are handmade imagining “Relax”. Starting from tanned leather, color was added after the clothes were made. There was also a focus on creating a cool and simple look with minimum stitching via a special method called ‘Skin Stitch’, where strings are stitched inside the leather’s thickness. The leather tanned by pure water from the mountains matches the No,No,Yes!’s pursuit of the Japanese style. This theme encapsulates the pursuit of excellence in the KARESANSUI’s aesthetics of using controlled ink painting colors.” – Nao Yokoo (LE PARRAIN)
*AGURI SAGIMORI (wears) + SAKAGUCHI KOSHI FOR BLAZE (shoes)*
“The inspiration for 2012-12AW is the thought of “packing the beautiful body of women into a frame”. Graphically, women’s hair, body parts and uterus are like a collage. Details like hand painting, prints, and long fringes decorate the frame in a painterly manner.” – Aguri Sagimori
“Our shoes are made for each wearer to be 100% satisfied with their design and comfort. The heels are 10cm but the thickness of the sole makes it feel like wearing 7.5cm heels.” – Koshi Sakaguchi
*GENTEN*
“We expressed the world of “genten” with a number of items that are made carefully one by one including new items and items from the standard line.”
